The item screen showing all weapons

Note: this page is specifically for main weapons. For long-range/projectile weapons and shields, see Sub-Weapons.

Main Weapons are your primary tools for beating up baddies and surviving the ruins, which you'll use with the main attack button. They are all designed for close-range combat and have differing strength, speed, range, and angles of attack. Main Weapons can be selected from the Menu or switched on the go using the Switch Weapon controls, and your current equipped weapon is displayed as the center icon in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Different attributes of main weapons can be enhanced by the Gauntlet and Spaulder, as well as by certain Software Combinations.

List of Weapons[]

Whip[]

Icon whip
  • (Japanese: ムチ, "Muchi" / lit. "Whip")
  • Location: Starting item.
  • Description: The basic weapon you start with. When attacking, it swings briefly above and behind the player, hitting targets in a narrow area (which can still reach slightly through a platform), then extends in front of the player over a larger area. It has a medium attack speed, and deals 2 points of damage, but cannot hit below the player's waist.
  • In-Game Description: The one and only weapon the professor brought with him.

Chain Whip[]

Icon chainwhip
  • (Japanese: 鎖ムチ, "Kusari muchi" / lit. "Chain whip")
  • Location: Inferno Cavern (A-3) - Break the Birth Wall Seal in (D-3) and use the Grapple Claw while descending from (D-2) to access the passage that appears on the left. (This can also be done with the Feather.) Defeat Pazuzu in (B-3) to access (A-3). Place a weight on one of the pedestals to raise its corresponding pillar, and then jump onto the pillar so it takes you up to the top of the room, and jump off onto the top center platform before the pillar squashes you against the ceiling. Place a weight on the pedestal in the center of the top platform to remove the weapon cover, and carefully jump down to the platform just below you to collect the Chain Whip. The pillar status is permanent, so if you raise either pillar and then end up at the bottom of the room without collecting the weapon, you'll need to reload a save or else it will be permanently locked off.
  • Description: A stronger version of the Whip, which replaces it in the same menu slot, and swings at the same speed in an identical attack pattern, dealing 4 points of damage.
  • In-Game Description: A whip made with chains. Deals greater damage than a regular whip.

Flail Whip[]

Icon flailwhip
  • (Japanese: 鉄球ムチ, "Tekkyū muchi" / lit. "Iron-ball whip")
  • Location: Tower of the Goddess (C-4) - You must speak with Samaranta at Tower of the Goddess (C-5) after obtaining the Philosophers' Ocarina to make the ladder to (C-4) appear. Refer to Room of Gems and Scales for the puzzle solution. You only get one chance to solve this puzzle, and the only way to reset it aside from loading your save is by talking to the Time Fairy in the Gate of Time after beating Tiamat.
  • Description: The strongest version of the Whip, which replaces both of the other whips in the menu, and swings at the same speed in the same attack pattern, but deals 8 points of damage.
  • In-Game Description: A whip made of chain attached to a steel ball. It boasts exceptional attack power.

Knife[]

Icon knife
  • (Japanese: ナイフ, "Naifu" / lit. "Knife")
  • Location: Temple of the Sun (D-2) - Jump and throw three Shurikens through the gap at the top of the screen to break the pot on the pillar and open the wall. (If you have the Bracelet, only one will be needed. This can also be done with the Chakram, by rolling a Bomb through the gap, or by double-jumping to the platform below and firing Flares at the pot.) Proceed down the ladder on the right and use a weight to bypass the gate, then depress the floor switch to reveal the Knife.
  • Description: A fast weapon with a very short range that hits targets directly in front of and slightly below the player, dealing 3 points of damage. Can be used to break pots from above as well as certain floors. It is the fastest of the main weapons, becoming even faster when combined with the Gauntlet.
  • In-Game Description: Light and easy to use. Ideal for speedy attacks.

Key Sword[]

Icon keysword
  • (Japanese: 鍵剣, "Kagi ken" / lit. "Keyblade")
  • Location: Endless Corridor (C-2) - Simply hit the weapon cover at the bottom of the screen to break it and reveal the Key Sword. Solving the puzzle on this floor is not required to obtain it.
  • Description: A ceremonial blade that extends directly in front of the player, slightly faster than the Whip, dealing 2 points of damage. Has the longest range of any weapon, albeit narrow, and the center of the sword can hit slightly lower to the ground than the Whip. After reciting all of the Mantras, the center of the Key Sword glows red and deals 8 damage, making it the second strongest weapon in the game alongside the Flail Whip. Required for starting the battle with Mother.
  • In-Game Description: A sword whose center is shaped like a key. It is difficult to use, and does not deal much damage.
  • In-Game Description (after upgrade): A sword whose center is shaped like a key. With the seal now broken, a red light emanates from its center.

Axe[]

Icon axe
  • (Japanese: , "Ono" / lit. "Hatchet")
  • Location: Temple of Moonlight (B-3) - Break the upper-left wall of (C-3) to access the room. Jump up the slopes using Hermes' Boots or the Feather, and attack the skull holding the boulder in place in the upper-left corner. When it breaks, get out of the way of the rolling boulder (which will kill you instantly) to let it crash into the switch in the lower-right corner, revealing the Axe.
  • Description: A slow, strong weapon that swings forward in a wide arc, from above the player all the way down to the floor, dealing 5 points of damage. This is the most useful main weapon for hitting enemies above you (too far for the Whip to reach), and is also very effective against bosses, especially if you obtain it early in the game.
  • In-Game Description: Swing down this axe to make mincemeat of foes. It is heavy and slows movement, but provides a wide attack range.

Katana[]

Icon katana
  • (Japanese: , "Katana" / lit. "Katana")
  • Location: Twin Labyrinths (I-2) - After obtaining the Twin Statue and defeating Peryton in (I-3), climb the ladder to enter the lower part of (I-2), then use the Twin Gate to the corresponding part of (B-2). Depress the floor switch there to make a new floor switch appear back in (I-2). Depress the new switch to remove the weapon cover up above. Stand on the left side to fall back into (I-3), or warp out, and enter (I-2) from (H-2) to collect the Katana.
  • Description: A thin, curved sword that swings in a short arc from below the player to the front, dealing 5 points of damage. It's quick to come out, but doesn't extend far in front of the player, and remains in place for a long time at the end of the swing, making it somewhat slow to use repeatedly. (However, this can also be a positive attribute, as it remains out for so long that it can sometimes hit an enemy or object more than once during the same swing.) It is most useful for dispatching enemies below you and shorter enemies. There are also two walls hiding Coin Chests which can only be broken with the Katana.
  • In-Game Description: A Japanese sword suited for slashing. Attacks from bottom up.

Trivia[]

  • When a save file is artificially modified to remove all Main Weapons, including the Whip, loading the save and pressing either of the Main Weapon quick-switch buttons will cause the game to "hang" as it loops infinitely over the empty list, requiring a force quit. EXE patches are available to prevent this from happening in the PC version, primarily for use with the randomizer's Subweapon Start feature.
