The Fairy Queen

Fairies are NPCs that appear throughout the ruins.

Lemeza can summon one of four different fairies at various fairy points in the ruins. Each point can summon one of the four at random, with a given chance of each fairy, or one can be forced to appear with the proper software combination. After summoning a fairy, she'll fly after him wherever he goes, applying her effect, for a certain period of in-game time, before waving goodbye and disappearing with a sparkle of stars. After summoning a fairy, all fairy points will deactivate for a certain amount of in-game time beyond when the fairy despawns, preventing another fairy from being summoned right away.

If you don't have the right software, you can recognize which fairy has been summoned before it appears using the star pattern, and reset the fairy summoning by leaving the room before it finishes, letting you choose the fairy you want if you are quick enough, patient enough, and learn to recognize the different patterns.

Nothing about the current status of fairies and fairy points is stored in manual saves or quicksaves (except for which fairy points have been used at least once), meaning if the game is saved while a fairy is present, loading the save won't cause the fairy to reappear. However, this also means the fairy point cooldown timer will be reset to 0 when loading any save, which can be exploited to get around the cooldown and allow you to summon another fairy immediately.

    • Does not consume any ammo.
    • Won't use Pistol, Buckler, Shields, or Ankh Jewels.
    • Bombs and Caltrops still damage Lemeza as normal.
    • Her shots will still trigger divine retribution if they hit sacred objects, just as if Lemeza hit the object himself. (That's why some people call her "Amok Fairy.")

  • Summon chance: 20%
  • Duration: 2 minutes

Item Fairy[]

Fairy item
  • Also known as the Treasure Fairy.

  • Summon animation: Four stars spin inwards, two in a clockwise circle, two in a counterclockwise diamond (combination of Healing and Attack Fairy animations).
  • Summon chance: 15%
  • Duration: 1 minute

Key Fairy[]

Fairy key
  • Effect: Unlocks certain secret items and doors in the ruins. (The fairy will reveal secrets.) These include the chests containing the Fairy Clothes and the Spaulder, Mr. Fishman's alternate inventory, and the secret door into the Gate of Time. The Key Fairy is also necessary to use a couple of times to complete Hell Temple. Upon entering a room where the Key Fairy can be used, after continuing to follow the player for a couple of seconds, she will fly to a certain point in the room and hover there for a moment, before revealing the secret and despawning normally.
  • Summon animation: Four stars spin inward in a counterclockwise diamond pattern.
  • Summon chance: 5%
  • Duration: 2 minutes, or until reaching an unlock point

Trivia[]

The Healing Fairy will always appear during the credits after completing the game. The other three fairies and the Fairy Queen can appear if the player has met specific conditions; see Endings for details.

The various star patterns that indicate which fairy will appear are all actually a reference to The Maze of Galious. The final boss Galious uses a spinning ring of orbs which extend out to attack the player in those same patterns. Even the flashing colors of the stars match Galious' orbs!
